Mumbai, March 27: India’s largest pharmaceutical company, Mylan, has received a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance to produce the first generic version of its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.
Mylan’s production of the first generic version of the drug is expected to start in the second half of this year.
The first generic version of the drug, named ‘DoseOne’, will be produced by Mylan in two days, the company said in a regulatory filing.
“DoseOne’s generic Viagra is expected to be developed and produced by Mylan in a week”, the filing states, adding that the product’s name is “Erectile Dysfunction”, and its active ingredient, sildenafil, is also listed on the product’s label.
The generic version of the erectile dysfunction drug will be marketed as a ‘pharm-free’, ‘cheap, fast acting’, ‘cheap, low cost’, and ‘reliable’. It is currently sold under the brand name Viagra.
In an earlier filing, Mylan said that it had received approval from the US FDA to manufacture its generic version of Viagra and that it had received approval from the European Union (EU) to sell the generic version.
Mylan is a pharmaceutical company based in Mumbai, and has operations in more than 100 countries and is involved in the research and development of generic drugs, including Viagra and similar drugs, and its own brand drug, called sildenafil citrate, which has been used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).
